Stonehouse Gallery

The inspiration for the name of this website “Stonehouse Gallery” comes from Zimbabwe’s namesake - Great Zimbabwe.

Great Zimbabwe are ruins that are built entirely of stone and was once the capital of Zimbabwe between 1100 and 1400. The city was the royal palace for the various kings during this period and was the power base for these monarchs. Famous for its walls, of which some are over five metres high and constructed without mortar, the ruins at Great Zimbabwe are some of the oldest and largest structures in Southern Africa.

Zimbabwe derives from Dzimba-dza-mabwe, a Karanga dialect of Shona, as “large houses of stone”.
