Collins Chitaka

Collins ChitakaI was born in Mutare in Manicaland into a family of six - three boys’ three girls and I am the first in the family. I started Art at a tender age especially on stone carving and during the late 80s I enrolled at Mt Hampden Arts Institute in Harare, where I did a two year course in Art and Designing.

After that I worked at Cannon Peterson in Mbare and Kubatana co-op in Warren Park in Harare, after that I went to Nyanga where I worked with the likes of Harry Chingono, the late Bernard Muchirahondo and  Farai Nheuka to mention a few.

In the mid-90s I moved to Bulawayo where I met the likes of Lloyd Madzura, the late Gorge Nene and Dicksen Nyedwa. He and one of his former students are the founders of  Kingfisher Sculpture Garden in Burnside, Bulawayo.

I have Exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally. I am the holder of many Awards, both regional and national; I have also been awarded a NAMA merit award. I am also a member of the Visual Arts Association of Bulawayo, VAAB.
