Georgina Winch

Georgina Winch I am a Fine Artist Specialising in Animal painting, drawing and Limited edition bronze sculpture. I graduated from Port Elizabeth Technikon in 1995 majoring in Sculpture, I passed with distinction. I have worked since as a self employed artist in Africa and UK. While abroad I freelanced extensively in two highly regarded fine art bronze casting foundries. I have gained invaluable knowledge of the entire process, bronzes potential and versatility. I look at an animal’s particular characteristics, vitality and personality to determine what gestural treatment and patination will create the actions and tenuousness of the moment best. I paint in oils, pastels and acrylic and have experimented with wax and mixed media. Two dimensional drawing and painting is a process of exploring and understanding forms and movement which has a direct relevance on my sculpture. I have become aware of the desire for the less obvious portrayal of African Fauna and Flora and am at present doing pen and ink studies of cattle, particularly trek oxen and multicoloured native cattle. I am also concentrating on a theme of small juicy oil studies of the veldt, views that include species of aloes, granite kopjies and dwala’s. Aloes and succulents are very sculptural and I am enjoying the feeling of generously applied oil, the positive and negative shapes and shadows formed by their strong structure in a composition. I have a studio in Bulawayo after years overseas I find the reconnection with the raw essence of the African landscape essential in being able to portray its wildlife with acuity and sensitivity. I have participated in Exhibitions held by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to raise awareness and funds for Conservation including being short listed for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition 2008. I undertake many private commissions and have work around the world.
